Abstract

This study aims to analyze the operational model of Baitul Maal wa Tamwil (BMT) in empowering the poor, grounded in the values of the Qur’an. Poverty is not merely perceived as an economic issue but also as a social challenge requiring a comprehensive solution rooted in spiritual and moral principles. The Qur’an provides essential instruments to address social inequality, such as zakat, infāq, ṣadaqah, and waqf, which serve as mechanisms for equitable wealth distribution. BMT emerges as an Islamic microfinance institution that integrates two main functions: baitul maal as the manager of social funds, and baitul tamwil as the provider of microfinance based on partnership and free from ribā. This research employs a qualitative approach using a descriptive-analytical method through the review of primary and secondary literature. The findings reveal that the operational model of BMT, founded upon the Qur’anic principles of justice, equity, and sustainability, has a tangible impact on empowering the poor. BMT functions not only as a financial institution but also as an agent of social transformation that fosters economic independence, reduces reliance on non-Islamic practices such as moneylenders, and strengthens the community’s spiritual foundation. Hence, integrating Qur’anic values into the operational system of BMT may serve as an effective model for creating sustainable welfare while supporting the broader objectives of Islamic economics.
